About
The only interactive city-level BSL database
BSL Check exists because no one else built it. Over 1,000 US cities have breed-specific legislation on the books — and until now, there was no single tool that let dog owners look up their city before signing a lease, accepting military orders, or adopting a dog.
Why this site exists
Dog owners moving to a new city shouldn't have to dig through municipal code websites, call animal control offices, or rely on outdated forum posts to find out if their dog is legal where they're going. That information should be one search away.
Military families facing PCS orders. Apartment renters trying to sign a lease. Prospective adopters at a shelter. All of them need a fast, reliable answer. BSL Check is that answer.

Breed restrictions
Every city record includes the banned or restricted breeds, requirements (muzzle, microchip, insurance, etc.), penalties, and a direct link to the municipal ordinance. We don't summarize — we cite the source.
Our position on BSL
BSL Check is deliberately neutral. We report what the law says. We do not advocate for or against breed-specific legislation. Our job is to make the law transparent and accessible — what you do with that information is up to you.
Data accuracy
Ordinances change. Cities repeal bans. States pass preemption laws. We verify our data quarterly against primary sources — municipal code databases, state statutes, and official city websites. Every record shows a "last verified" date so you know how fresh the data is.
This is not legal advice. Always verify with your local animal control office or city attorney before making decisions based on this data.
How we're funded
BSL Check is free to use. We earn affiliate commissions when visitors purchase pet insurance through links on this site. This does not affect our data or editorial decisions. See our methodology page for full disclosure.
